Fuel Efficient Trucks in Canada

We’re all well aware that gas prices are not what they used to be. Now hitting record highs across the country, not many of us are joyriding like we once were. This gas crisis, however, is encouraging automakers to design their pickups to be more fuel efficient than ever.

If you’re doing anything that truck owners do, like off-roading or towing, you’ll definitely be wanting a truck that will get you as far as possible on a fill. Not only is that better for the environment, but for the lifespan of your truck, and not to mention, your wallet.

Trucks are the perfect vehicles for the challenges of every Canadian season. Whether you’re slowly making your way into work behind snowstorm-traffic pileups, or bringing your family and fifth-wheel to a weekend camping getaway, driving a fuel efficient truck means less gas ups and more saving.

Fuel economy ratings for pickup trucks have risen over the years, so you’re able to find fuel-efficient pickup trucks with rear-wheel drive, all-wheel drive, and four-wheel drive for off-road enthusiasts. There’s many options and no shortage of configurations, with crew cabs, double cabs, extended cabs and multiple bed lengths out there.

Whether you want an affordable midsize pickup truck or a full-size pickup, you’re able to find one with better fuel economy than you would probably expect from the current truck segment.

The curated lists are on the basis of official EPA combined MPG ratings.

So, without further ado, here’s our list for the top 5 midsize and full-size fuel efficient trucks available in Canada in 2022.

Coming in at number 5 for most fuel efficient midsize trucks is the Chevrolet Colorado. The 181 – 308 HP Chevrolet Colorado offers about 19 combined MPG.

4. GMC Canyon

Ranking at number 4 is the GMC Canyon. The GMC Canyon is a near-twin of the Chevrolet Colorado. They are made on the same assembly lines with essentially the same key components. The 181 – 308 HP GMC Canyon delivers about 22 (2.8 L, 4 cyl, Automatic 6-spd, Turbo, Diesel) or 21 (2.5 L, 4 cyl, Automatic 6-spd, Regular Gasoline) combined MPG.

3. Hyundai Santa Cruz

Number 3 is the Hyundai Santa Cruz. The 191 HP Santa Cruz offers about 23 combined MPG.

2. Jeep Gladiator EcoDiesel

In second place for the most fuel efficient midsize trucks is the Jeep Gladiator EcoDiesel. The 260 HP Jeep Gladiator EcoDiesel offers about 24 combined MPG.

1. Ford Maverick

Reaching number 1 for the most fuel efficient midsize truck currently on the market is the Ford Maverick. The 191 HP Ford Maverick offers around 26 combined MPG. One of the smallest trucks on sale today, the Maverick utilizes the same platform as two SUVs, the Escape and Bronco Sport. While this may reduce the truck’s towing and off-roading capabilities, it results in a smooth ride, stable handling and great fuel economy.

Now, on to the big guys. Often known as large, thirsty and generally expensive, they continue to top sales charts no matter the economic climate. Nevertheless, with fuel expenses on the rise, getting more miles for your dollar will always be an attractive proposition.

5. Nissan Frontier

At Number 5 on our list of fuel efficient full size trucks, is the Nissan Frontier. This 310 HP Frontier delivers about 19 4WD, 20 2WD combined MPG.
